What is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS)? MSDS is the abbreviation of "Material Safety Data Sheet." In Turkish, it is commonly referred to as "Güvenlik Bilgi Formu (GBF)."
It is a document that explains the adverse effects of chemical substances and mixtures on human health and the environment, describes their physical and chemical hazards, and brings together under 16 headings the measures to be taken against these hazards.
Safety data sheets are the most important communication tool between manufacturers and downstream users of chemical products. Through these documents, manufacturers and suppliers provide their customers with broad and detailed information about the product.
For example, to quickly obtain concise information on what to do in the event of a fire, a chemical spill, during handling, in case of exposure, or in the event of hazards to people and the environment, it is necessary to use safety data sheets.
Safety Data Sheets are prepared to ensure that companies that manufacture or import chemical substances and mixtures, as well as their downstream users, have sufficient information to use the chemical product safely.
In Turkey, it is mandatory for your products' safety data sheets to be prepared, or translated into Turkish, by persons certified by an accredited organization.
Preparing, distributing and keeping Safety Data Sheets available in the required locations is a legal obligation. If the formulation or physical/chemical properties of a chemical change, the safety data sheet must be revised, and in Turkey all safety data sheets prepared before 13 December 2014 must be updated.
High monetary fines are also applied for products for which no Safety Data Sheets are available.
