Allantoin, CAS 97-59-6, is a raw material used as skin conditioning, soothing agent in cosmetics applications. Supplied by ISF CHEM.
Urea derivative used as a humectant and soothing agent in cosmetic formulations.
Allantoin is a chemical compound derived from uric acid, which is the reduced form of nucleic acids through oxidase action.
Allantoin is a known keratolytic agent, meaning it can increase the water content of cells. It also helps with the desquamation of the outer layers of the skin.
Keratolytic activity is used in the treatment of skin and scalp conditions such as warts, acne, dandruff and psoriasis. The epidermis, the outer layer of our skin, performs protective and regulatory functions, and the keratolytic effect acts on this layer. The epidermis synthesizes a large number of proteins and fats (lipids) that occur naturally in the stratum corneum.
Allantoin is also known to be effective in the skin's ability to repair and renew itself. A 2015 study conducted by the University of Liverpool confirmed the beneficial properties and scientific functions of allantoin delivered through skin care products.
According to a study on allantoin, redness and cracking on women's skin improved by more than 90% with a component containing only 0.2% allantoin. The active keratolytic properties of allantoin mean that it is an ideal ingredient for combating dandruff, breaking down large particles of dead skin cells.
Allantoin can be described as a versatile, safe and effective skin care ingredient with many different benefits, including softening and moisturizing the skin. According to the International Journal of Toxicology, allantoin has been found to be non-toxic and safe for use in various cosmetic applications.
It is an odorless, powdered, harmless and non-allergenic ingredient.
It is soluble in the aqueous phase of cosmetic products but mostly insoluble in the cosmetic oils commonly used. It is best incorporated into solutions by adding it to the aqueous phase, heating to 50 °C or mixing at 25 °C. Its aqueous solutions are stable at pH 3-8. Allantoin can decompose when heated for a long time in aqueous solution or in the presence of strong alkalis.
