Benzyl Alcohol, CAS 100-51-6, is a raw material used as preservative in cosmetics applications. Supplied by ISF CHEM.
Aromatic alcohol. A legal limit has been set for its concentration in cosmetic products.
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol with the formula C6H5CH2OH. It is a colorless liquid with a mild aromatic odor. Due to its polarity, low toxicity and low vapor pressure, it is a useful solvent. It is partially soluble in water (4 g/100 ml) and fully miscible with alcohols and diethyl ether. Unlike most other solvents, benzyl alcohol is non-flammable.
A 5% benzyl alcohol solution is an approved product used for the treatment of head lice.
In the pharmaceutical industry, benzyl alcohol at low concentrations is used to preserve intravenous medicines.
It is used as a solvent in the production of inks, paints, epoxy resins and varnishes.
In the cosmetics sector, it is used as a preservative, solvent, fluidity enhancer and odor masking agent.
In the food industry, it is used as a precursor for the flavor esters.
It is also used in the photography sector.
In nanotechnology, it is used as a dielectric solvent for the dielectrophoretic assembly of nanowires.
