Silicon Dioxide (Fumed), CAS 112945-52-5, is a raw material used as anti-caking agent in cosmetics, pharmaceutical applications. ISF CHEM supplies it in USP grade.
Fumed silica in fine powder form with the formula SiO2. The safety data sheet lists it under CAS 112945-52-5 and EC 231-545-4.
Silicon dioxide is a food additive with E number E-551. Its main uses in the food industry are: preventing caking in powdered products, improving free-flowing properties, preventing products from sticking to the inner walls of equipment due to the heat generated by high friction during processing, increasing efficiency in spray dryers and similar dryers and preventing dried products from sticking to equipment surfaces, increasing packaging efficiency, preventing moisture uptake and caking in highly hygroscopic powders (for example tomato powder and onion powder), forming suspensions, and controlling foam in wine and beer.
It can be used wherever caking and clumping problems occur in the food industry. Examples include milk powder, highly hygroscopic products, products produced in spray dryers, spices, salt, sugar (brown sugar and icing sugar), instant beverages, yeasts, yeast extracts, coffee creamer, powdered bouillon, vitamin preparations, dry blends, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, food supplements, baking powder, powdered drinks, flavors, egg powder, powdered soup sachets, amino acids, vegetable powders, garlic powder, onion powder and tomato powder.
Silicon dioxide also has a wide range of applications in the toothpaste, rubber, tire, plastics, paint, composite, foam-cutting, feed, agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.
The silica type is selected with a particle size and absorption capacity suitable for the particle size of the product to be treated. As a general guideline, a silica whose particle size is 1/7 of the product's particle size is recommended. In other words, if 7 units of silica particles coat 1 unit of product particle, the desired free-flowability is achieved and the product will not cake.
